Florida Atlantic University student suspended for refusing to stomp on Jesus

Fox News reports.

Excerpt:

A Florida Atlantic University student said he was punished after he refused a professor’s directive to stomp on a piece of paper with the word “Jesus” written on it. The university, meanwhile, is defending the assignment as a lesson in debate.

“I’m not going to be sitting in a class having my religious rights desecrated,” student Ryan Rotela told television station WPEC. “I truly see this as I’m being punished.”

Rotela, who is a devout Mormon, said the instructor in his Intercultural Communications class told the students to write the name “Jesus” on a sheet of paper. Then, they were told to put the paper on the floor.

“He had us all stand up and he said ‘Stomp on it,’” Rotela said. “I picked up the paper from the floor and put it right back on the table.

The young college student told the instructor, Deandre Poole, that the assignment was insulting and offensive.

“I said to the professor, ‘With all due respect to your authority as a professor, I do not believe what you told us to do was appropriate,’” Rotela said. ‘I believe it was unprofessional and I was deeply offended by what you told me to do.’”

Rotela took his concerns to Poole’s supervisor – where he was promptly suspended from the class.

Poole did not return calls seeking comment.

According to his university profile, he has a PhD from Howard University and is authoring a book titled, “Obamamania: The Rise of a Mythical Hero.”

A university spokesperson told they could not comment about Rotela’s case due to student privacy laws.

However, the university is defending the instructor’s assignment to stomp on the name of Jesus.

“As with any academic lesson, the exercise was meant to encourage students to view issues from many perspectives, in direct relation with the course objectives,” said Noemi Marin, the university’s director of the school of communication and multimedia studies.

“While at times the topics discussed may be sensitive, a university environment is a venue for such dialogue and debate,” Marin added.

Yes, the university is a place for dialog and debate, which is why they suspend you if you disagree with their leftist mythology.

The troubling thing is that the suspended students had to pay money to have leftist religion shoved down his throat. He even paid to be suspended for refusing to participate in their anti-religious bigotry. If you’re going to go to college, try to study something quantitative and testable, like engineering or computer science. The non-quantitative part of university is absolutely dominated by secular leftists like this bully Poole. It’s not a debate they are looking for, it’s compliance. There is no critical thinking among these leftists. They are so close-minded that they attack anyone who disagrees with them. They can’t even listen to a different point of view. It’s best to just study something that you can get paid for, especially if your goal is to get married and support a family. Don’t take classes in things like “International Communication” – that’s where you find the unqualified and unskilled people teaching their leftist ideology.

Would the Professor have the guts to do force students to stomp on the the name of Mohammed?

  2. Pat Joy says:

I wonder what would have happened if there was a Muslim in the class and they had been told to write the name of Mohammed on a piece of paper and stamp on it. The professor would probably be dead by now.

  4. It’s good advice to tell people to study math and science. However, anyone going to college is going to have to take some other courses. You may not be majoring or minoring in history, psychology, philosophy, or english, but you will have to take at least some courses in fields other than your major.

However, you are less likely to run into problems if you take the more mainstream, normal courses to fulfill those requirements instead of specialty courses. Specialty courses are basically an excuse for a professor to get paid to talk about his favorite topics. And since they rarely have a textbook or set list of topics, and since the content of the exams and the grading isn’t standardized between multiple sections, you are more at the mercy of the professor than usual. Not only can the prof cover whatever he wants, with whatever bias he wants, if he doesn’t like you or your views, he can fail you. That can still happen in commonly taught classes, but it’s less likely.

So take American History rather than Black History. Take Intro to Psych rather than Psychology of Gender. Not only are those basic classes usually a better overview of the subject and better on a resume, but they’re safer. You’re less likely to find yourself in a hostile environment masquerading as education.

    • That’s good advice, Lindsay. I think that you want to stay away from English as well. If you can take business and economics courses, that’s probably better for an elective.

      • Most colleges will require at least some English classes for any degree program. However, it’s usually only 2-3 of them. I’ve found that English Composition classes are comparatively safe since they usually focus on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and other details about writing. However, literature classes are often full of junk. If you can get classes that focus on older literature, it’s somewhat better. Newer “literature” is filled with feminist propaganda, pushes the sexual revolution mindset, and rewrites history to shore up current politically correct views. Literature that doesn’t actually do these things is interpreted that way. It’s more indoctrination than education. Of course, it can vary considerably from school to school and even from professor to professor, but this is the norm.

I took a Lit course where the professor explained how Moby Dick was about a “sperm” whale (thus the name “Moby Dick) (I am not kidding) and was a sexual book through and through. In other words, professors can mess up even old stuff.

          • Holy mackerel. You can’t make things up that are that ridiculous. These leftists are in some sort of ongoing childhood where they appear to be working in the real world, but they’re not.

          • Pat Joy says:

A child would see Moby Dick as an adventure story, and wouldn’t even think of anything like that.

          • Academia these days is infested with the twisted philosophy of Freud…everything is about sex and aggression. If it isn’t, it must be reinterpreted to be really (secretly) about sex and aggression (usually of men against women since the feminist mindset sees that everywhere). These people really don’t know how to think of things any other way.

          • SLIMJIM says:

My sister in law had a class where she had to take for a literature requirement that ended up projecting feminist theory into the text and saw red riding hood as a narrative about rape and other wrong stuff. Twisted world we live in.

They say it was a “debate”, ok. But a debate is a discussion. Giving Ryan directions to “act out something (stomping)”, has NOTHING to do with a “debate”! I hope he sues the university, the supervisor, Poole, and anyone else guilty of “stomping” on his God given rights and his Constitutional rights as an American!!! He will be rewarded by God himself, and may God have mercy on the guilty ones and open their eyes! Shame on them!!!

    • Pat Joy says:

A debate is about listening to both sides of an arguement. Telling someone they must do as they are told when it goes against their argument is not a debate.

  6. Bob Beeman says:

    From a former WWII PoW:

PoWs were told to take their uniforms off and stomp on them to kill vermin. Photographs were taken so the captors could claim they hated the military and/or their country. Used for propaganda purposes and to dishearten PoWs.

No different there I would say.
