William Lane Craig vs. John Shelby Spong on the resurrection of Jesus

William Lane Craig is the greatest Christian debater in the history of the church, and Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong is a very liberal non-Christian.

Part 1 of 2: (61 minutes)

Part 2 of 2: (42 minutes)

The moderator is none other than the famous journalist David Aikman! The opening speeches are only 15 minutes, and the rebuttals are 10 minutes. This debate is accessible because Craig’s opponent is not really attacking him on a scholarly basis, but more as the pretty typical liberal atheist that you meet at work.

Craig spends all of his opening speech explaining historical methods, sources, dating and how he infers the resurrection as the best explanation of the minimal facts. The resurrection of Jesus is quite awesome to debate when people are given time to explain the historical methods and how the scholars use these methods to evaluate which facts are likely to be historical and which are not.

Spong doesn’t believe in the resurrection of Jesus, and he’s a bishop in a Christian church. That surely doesn’t make any sense?!

Jamie, I can see you haven’t come across the Episcopal Church before! As a UK Anglican I find them a bit of a joke.

William Lane Craig does a storming job here.

Closing speech: the “Christ figure”?! If I knew Wintery personally, really knew him, do you think I would refer to him as the “Wintery figure”? Beware of people who talk of the “Christ event”, the “Christ figure”. They invariably re-define Christ in tame terms that suit them. As my Apologetics prof James Beverley said of smooth-talking liberal Christians who use all the right words but gut them of their original meaning and infuse them with new meaning that suits them, “beware the kiss of Judas”

Liberal Christians — slip, slidin’ away.

  4. Matt says:

Theologians like Spong (and his influence Tillich) confuse me. If God is nothing more than an impersonal ground of being then what does he care what we do? That god is totally irrelevant. Why worship him or even talk about him? It seems to me that by his own belief the job of bishop means you do nothing more than waste everyone’s time. If he wants to do good he should just join the peace core or become a philanthropist.
